Cold-storage provider SokoFresh backed by Acumen

SokoFresh, a Kenyan cold-storage solutions company, has received investment support from Acumen to increase the number of small-holder farmers it currently supports from 8,000.

The funding is the impact investor’s first from a new USD 25mn initiative PEII+, which provides early-stage capital to businesses that support small-holder farmers in East Africa, West Africa and India.

With Acumen’s support, we can empower more farmers in Kenya and beyond to access fair and transparent markets, increase food security, and ultimately boost their incomes. We’re thrilled to be working with a partner that shares our mission of using climate-smart solutions to create a sustainable and equitable food system

Denis Karema, CEO

SokoFresh aims to reduce the post-harvest losses suffered by farmers due to a lack of facilities to preserve their produce and unreliable supply chains. The company solves this problem by supplying solar-powered cold-storage solutions to the horticulture sector and finding domestic and export-processing buyers through its market-linkage platform that eliminates middle men.
