Mahathi Infra Uganda, an engineering, procurement and construction company has received USD 95.25mn from Africa Finance Corporation to finance the construction of two self-propelled barges, that will operate on Lake Victoria. The investment also supports complementary infrastructure, which includes fourteen petroleum storage tanks, twenty truck-loading bays, a jetty and a parking area with a capacity of 50 trucks.
The investment in the barrages offers a more efficient and less carbon-intensive alternative to trucks by replacing 200 trucks and eliminate 100,000 journeys on the Kisumu-Kampala route—a journey of 350km. And specifically, will decrease greenhouse gas emissions by over 95% from 172,103 tonnes to 7,692 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Once the deal completes the company’s workforce will increase from 22 to 100 employees of which 30% will be women.
